Where It Began
A Lighthouse for Lost Paws
El Faro de los Animales started with a simple belief: no dog or cat in Puerto Rico should be left in the dark. Since 2001, we have run a limited-admission shelter on the island's southeastern coast, giving animals from the streets and beaches a safe place to land, heal and finally be seen.

Growing Together
Today El Faro is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has served Puerto Rico for more than 25 years. Through hurricanes, earthquakes and a pandemic, the light stayed on. Volunteers became staff, neighbors became supporters, and more than 3,000 animals found their way home.
The Light Stays On
Care That Heals
We rescue, rehabilitate and protect abandoned dogs and cats with shelter, food, veterinary care and plenty of love. Adoption and transport partnerships guide them to loving homes, and lifelong sanctuary is here for those who need it.

Our small, mighty team works side by side with volunteers, adopters, donors and partners who show up for animals every day. Every walk, wag, donation and ride to a new home helps another animal step into the light.
